Our Body Wash refills are 100% plastic-free and made from compostable materials. Because the refill is made from compostable materials, once you have finished using it you can put it in your compost heap!
If you have a compost heap, this is the best place to put your empty refill. Just wash it out and cut it into pieces where the packaging will break down into nutrient-rich compost. This can be used to nourish plants and gardens! 🌱🌿
If you don't have a compost heap, it is easy to start one and can be done in small outdoor spaces or even indoors using special composting bins. If you can't compost the packaging at home or don't have access to a compost heap, you can also check for local industrial composting facilities in your area.
No access to composting?
The refill can also be disposed of in general waste. Wild's refills are made from plants (including plant waste) using a carbon-efficient production and these sustainability benefits still apply no matter what happens to the refill after use.
If it ends up in landfill, the refill will continue to biodegrade but this may be at a slower rate due to the compact nature of landfills for biodegradation. Crucially though, studies have shown that compostable, plant-based packaging is inert and does not give off harmful gases such as methane in the same way plastics do.
How about recycling?
The refill cannot yet be placed in regular recycling bins because the current recycling system is not designed to handle novel materials like this. This just shows how new and innovative our refills are!
However, we are working hard to get recyclers on side as we believe our compostable packaging material will become widespread and used not just by Wild, but all consumer companies in the future. ♻️
Does it have a use-by date?
Unlike conventional plastic bottles that persist in the environment for years, our bamboo refill is biodegradable. This means that 6 months after it has been filled with body wash, the refill will start to break down naturally and begin its composting journey.
As a result our refills have "use by dates" 6 months from their filling date - this date will be clearly printed on the refill neck. We think this is a really cool feature, and represents just how natural our refills are - all packaging should have a use-by date and shouldn't stick aronund forever 😃
Overall, our refills are a more environmentally responsible alternative to their single-use plastic counterparts and will biodegrade wherever they end up. Embracing compostable materials is an impactful step towards a more sustainable future.
